David Jonsson Named Marvel’s New Black Panther, Set to Lead Franchise’s Next Chapter

Marvel Studios has officially unveiled David Jonsson as the new Black Panther, introducing the Nigerian-Sierra Leonean British actor during a surprise announcement at San Diego Comic-Con.

The 32-year-old actor, best known for his role as Gus Sackey in HBO’s Industry, will portray T’Challa’s son in the third installment of the blockbuster superhero franchise.

Director Ryan Coogler introduced Jonsson to an enthusiastic audience, welcoming him as the newest face of one of Marvel’s most iconic superheroes.

“I want you to give a warm welcome to our new Black Panther: Mr David Jonsson,” Coogler said.

Responding to the announcement, Jonsson expressed gratitude for the opportunity to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

“Thank you, Ryan. Thank you, Kevin. Thank you to this amazing family that I have the honour and privilege and the blessing to join,” he said.

Born in London, Jonsson has previously spoken about his multicultural heritage, which includes Nigerian, Sierra Leonean, Caribbean and Swedish roots. His casting is expected to resonate strongly with audiences across Africa and the global diaspora.

The actor first gained widespread recognition through Industry before earning further acclaim for his performance in the 2023 romantic comedy Rye Lane. He later starred in Alien: Romulus (2024) and the 2025 adaptation of Stephen King’s The Long Walk. In 2025, he also received the BAFTA Rising Star Award, recognising his growing influence in the film industry.

The original Black Panther, released in 2018, became a global phenomenon, earning about $1.3 billion at the worldwide box office and receiving seven Academy Award nominations, winning three.

Following the death of Chadwick Boseman in 2020 after a private battle with cancer, Marvel chose not to recast his version of T’Challa. Instead, the studio shifted the franchise’s focus to the wider world of Wakanda while preserving Boseman’s legacy.

Jonsson’s appointment signals a new era for the franchise, with Marvel introducing a new generation of Black Panther while continuing the legacy of one of its most celebrated superhero stories.
