K1 De Ultimate’s Saxophonist Apologises Over Viral ‘Unnecessary Pregnancy’ Performance

The saxophonist of Fuji music legend K1 De Ultimate, Olawale Adekoya, has apologised over the controversial stage performance that sparked outrage on social media, insisting the singer was not responsible for the viral chant.

Adekoya made the apology in a video shared on his TikTok page, where he accepted full responsibility for interpreting the band’s alujo drum rhythm during the performance.

The controversy erupted after a video showed K1 performing a song referencing “unnecessary pregnancy,” days after a woman publicly alleged that the Fuji star abandoned her and their 12-year-old daughter. Although the timing fueled speculation, K1 never confirmed that the performance was directed at the allegations.

Addressing the issue, Adekoya explained that the drum rhythm had been part of the band’s performances for years and only later became associated with humorous interpretations among band members.

“I will start by taking full responsibility for what happened on stage because I was the one who interpreted the alujo when the percussionists were playing the beat. Everything went wrong because it happened at a very sensitive time, and I accept full responsibility,” he said.

According to him, the rhythm was originally created by percussionist Ayokunle Ayolowo after rejoining the band and had become one of K1’s favourite performance beats.

He added that the phrase now attracting criticism was one of several playful interpretations created by the band long before the recent controversy.

Adekoya stressed that K1 neither suggested nor approved the interpretation.

“Alhaji knew nothing about it. He wasn’t involved in the interpretation and never told us what to say. He was even surprised that we eventually attached a meaning to the rhythm,” he explained.

He also denied claims that the performance was intended to mock the woman or her daughter, describing it as an innocent backstage joke that was misunderstood because of the timing.

Apologising on behalf of the band’s members, Adekoya acknowledged that the performance came at the wrong moment.

“We are very sorry. To everyone who was hurt or disappointed, please accept our sincere apology.”

He added that his apology was voluntary and not made under pressure, saying the band accepts responsibility for the unfortunate timing of the performance.
