Majid Michel Says Comparing Ghana’s Film Industry to Nigeria’s Makes No Sense
eteran Ghanaian actor Majid Michel has criticised comparisons between Ghana’s film industry and Nigeria’s Nollywood, describing them as unfair because of the significant difference in the populations of both countries.
Michel made the remarks during a recent interview with Y1079 FM in Accra, where he argued that Nigeria’s larger population gives it a greater pool of actors, filmmakers and other creative professionals.
According to the actor, comparing the two industries without considering their demographic differences ignores an important factor that influences the number of talents available in each country.
He described the comparison as “stupid,” insisting that Nigeria’s population advantage naturally increases its chances of producing more successful professionals across different fields.
“The comparison between us and Nigeria is such a stupid comparison to me. If you have 50 children and I have five children, the possibility that you will have more criminals, doctors, good children and filmmakers than me is very high,” he said.

Michel noted that Ghana has a population of fewer than 40 million people, while Nigeria has more than 200 million residents and could approach 300 million, depending on estimates.
He argued that Nigeria’s larger population makes it reasonable for the country to have more doctors, actors and filmmakers than Ghana.
The actor also extended his argument beyond the entertainment industry, saying Ghana should avoid unfair comparisons with more established countries when discussing leadership and development.
According to Michel, some nations have spent centuries building institutions and systems, while Ghana still has significant progress to make.
He maintained that differences in population, institutional development and available opportunities should be considered before judging the performance of countries or their industries.
Michel’s comments have renewed discussions about the relationship between Ghana’s movie industry and Nollywood, one of Africa’s most prominent film industries.
