Expensive Data, Poor Internet Driving Decline in Nigeria’s Entertainment Viewership – Tofehinti

Chief Executive Officer of NolliStream, Olu Oluwa Tofehinti, has identified high data costs and unreliable internet connectivity as major obstacles limiting the growth of Nigeria’s digital entertainment industry.

Speaking during the official launch of NolliStream on Tuesday, Tofehinti said the newly introduced streaming platform was specifically designed to address the realities faced by many Nigerian viewers who struggle with expensive internet access and inconsistent network coverage.

According to him, the platform offers a practical alternative by providing free access to a wide range of Nigerian and African entertainment content without requiring users to pay monthly subscription fees.

Now available for download on both the Apple App Store and Google Play Store, NolliStream features an extensive collection of Nollywood and African films, including dramas, comedies, thrillers and television programmes. Tofehinti said the company intends to continuously expand its content library to provide viewers with fresh and diverse entertainment options.

He explained that, unlike several streaming services operating in Nigeria that rely on paid subscriptions, NolliStream adopts a free-access model aimed at reaching millions of viewers who are unable or unwilling to subscribe to premium platforms.

Beyond affordability, the platform also incorporates parental control features, allowing families to regulate age-appropriate content and ensure safer viewing experiences for children. Tofehinti further noted that NolliStream’s data management system complies fully with the provisions of the Nigeria Data Protection Act, assuring users that their personal information is handled securely.

The CEO added that while the platform is designed primarily for Nigerian audiences, it also targets viewers across the African diaspora who are seeking easy access to Nollywood and other African productions.

With its focus on accessibility, affordability and locally relevant content, NolliStream hopes to bridge the digital entertainment gap by making quality African movies and television programmes available to a broader audience regardless of financial or connectivity challenges.
