Nollywood Actress Cautions Against Marrying Into Families That Reject Their Children’s Partners
Veteran Nollywood actress Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde has urged couples facing family opposition to seek understanding before ending their relationships, while also cautioning against committing to a lifetime of hostility.
In a recent interview, she encouraged partners to make genuine efforts to bridge gaps with disapproving relatives rather than walking away at the first sign of resistance. Omotola explained that some opposition may stem from long-held prejudices, including biases related to ethnicity, background, or personal beliefs, and that patience, empathy, and sincere engagement can sometimes ease tensions.
At the same time, she warned that not all family resistance can be resolved. Some relatives may appear to soften only to revert to hostility later, creating ongoing strain in a marriage. “Marriage in itself is already an institution where you’re going to face a lot. It’s a lifetime journey,” she said, noting that entering a marriage without family support could make the journey unnecessarily difficult.
Omotola emphasized that couples should consider the long-term implications of marrying into a family that opposes their relationship. While love is important, a lack of family backing can lead to constant conflict and emotional stress, making a healthy, lasting partnership much harder to maintain. Her advice highlights the importance of balancing emotional connection with a supportive environment, encouraging couples to invest in understanding but also to recognize when opposition may be impossible to overcome.
